In his final address as president, Barack Obama insists that if Donald Trump goes against "core values" surrounding civil rights it will cause the exiting politician to take action, adding "It doesn't mean that I would get on the ballot anywhere." Obama also took the opportunity in his last few days as president to send a $500 million sum to the Green Climate Fund. It is believed that this will be the last instalment from the US government with Trump thought to be cutting donations to what he calls the "hoax" climate change.

Johnny Depp wins the Favourite Movie Icon award at the People's Choice Awards. Collecting the accolade, which is voted for by the public, Depp said: "I came here for one reason, and one reason only. I came here for you, the people, who through whatever good times or bad have stood by me and trusted me. Thank you. You very graciously invited me here once again tonight. I appreciate it. You have no idea how much I appreciate it. I was very deeply affected by the kindness of your recognition and your well wishes to me and my family."

Paul McCartney reveals that he is taking legal action against Sony in a bid to reclaim the rights of the songs he wrote with his Beatles bandmate John Lennon. Famously bought by Michael Jackson in 1985 for £38.7m, the Beatles catalogue has been the property of Sony since the American star's death in 2009.
